Abstract
806,032. Cathode materials and processing. PATELHOLD PATENTVERWERTUNGS- & ELECTRO-HOLDING A.G. Sept. 8, 1955 [Sept. 8, 1954], No. 25744/55. Class 39(1). A thermionic cathode comprising an alkaline earth metal compound on a metal carrier is processed by being heated, a portion at a time, to at least 3500‹C. The carrier may be nickel, and the compound a mixture of the usual oxides, e.g. 40-100 per cent. barium oxide, 0-60 per cent. strontium oxide, and 0-15 per cent calcium oxide. The process may be carried out by making the cathode one electrode of an electric arc, preferably struck in a low-pressure atmosphere of inert gas. The focal spot of the arc jumps about from point to point over the cathode surface, heating each point momentarily to the required temperature. The finished cathode operates at 800‹C. It is substantially free of oxide, and may therefore be stored in air without contamination.
