Abstract

2,3,5,6 - tetrahydro - 1 - imidaz - (1,2-a) - imidazole is produced by a process comprising treating 1 - (b - aminoethyl) - 2 - imidazolidinethione in a solvent medium with a desulphurization agent selected from silver nitrate, silver oxide, mercuric oxide and chloroacetic acid. The preferred solvent medium is water but other solvents, e.g. benzene may be used. When chloroacetic acid is used as desulphurization agent the reaction may be represented by the following equation: <FORM:0805877/IV (b)/1> In the examples: (a) 1-(b -aminoethyl)-2-imidazolidinethione in water is heated with chloroacetic acid; (b) 1-(b -aminoethyl)-2-imidazolidinethione is treated with mercuric oxide in the presence of water; (c) silver nitrate in aqueous ethanol is added to 1-(b -aminoethyl)-2-imidazolidinethione in hot ethanol; and (d) 1-(b - aminoethyl) - 2 - imidazolidinethione is refluxed with chloroacetic acid and water. In each case 2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-1-imidaz-(1,2a)-imidazole is obtained.
