Abstract
<PICT:0805767/III/1> A method of protecting the walls of a reaction vessel 10 from attack by corrosive liquids which are solid at room temperature and which are contained in the vessel 10 comprises positioning a porous container 14 formed of a material, e.g. graphite, which is inert to the liquid, in the vessel 10, disposing a comminuted thermally-insulating material 15 . . . 17, e.g. carbon black, powdered carbon or graphite, or powdered metal, inert to the liquid, in the space between the container 14 and the vessel 10, and maintaining the walls of the vessel 10 at a temperature such that three zones are established in the insulating material 15 . . . 17, namely, a zone 15 in which the corrosive material is liquid, a zone 16 near the walls of the vessel 10 in which no corrosive material is present, and an intermediate zone 17 in which the corrosive material is present in solid form. A heater 22 is located in the vessel 10 and cooling means, e.g. pipes 12, which may be perforated and through which liquid is passed, surround the vessel 10.
