Abstract

805,619. Lubricating pumps. BROTHERSTON, A. C., and REBBECK, Sir F. E. Feb. 27, 1957, No. 6527/57. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXXIV] In an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder having air admission ports 6 which are overrun by the piston at or near the end of its outstroke, lubricant is sprayed through a port 8 into the cylinder once in every predetermined number of strokes of the piston so as to mix with the air admitted through the ports 6 and settle on the cylinder wall. The lubricant is sprayed by a pump which forces lubricant through a nozzle 14 into a chamber 25 where it becomes entrained by air under pressure, emitted from a chamber 18, and passes through perforated plates 10, to the port 8. The pump consists of a plunger 13 carrying at its forward end the nozzle 14 and a valve 17 controlling the air supply from the chamber 18. An axial bore 16 in the plunger 13 communicates at its forward end, through a non-return ball valve 15, with the nozzle 14, at its rear end, through an inclined recess 19, with an oil inlet passage 20, and, through a central radial passage 24, with an annular pump chamber 23. The plunger 13 is operated from the engine by a lever or cam which engages the head 21. A return spring 22 is provided. The quantity of oil delivered may be varied by rotation of the plunger 13 by means of a lever 26. Pump priming means 27 .. 30 are provided. Oil is delivered to the pump from a tank which incorporates a sight feed glass. In a modification, the plunger 13 is operated by pulsating oil pressure.
