Abstract

805,540. Reciprocating pumps. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. Nov. 13, 1953 [Feb. 17, 1953], No. 4378/53. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXVI] A double acting liquid pump for supplying liquid at substantially the pressure of a supply of gas comprises two coaxially arranged cylinders spaced apart by a fixed member of a sliding valve device, a free piston in each cylinder, each piston being mechanically independent of the other, a space for liquid on the inner side and a space for gas on the outer side of each piston, an inlet duet for low pressure liquid for each cylinder and an outlet duct for high pressure liquid for each cylinder, a non-return valve normally closed in each duct, and a movable member of the sliding valve device extending into the liquid space of each cylinder and operated by the pressure of the liquid, the arrangement being such that when the piston in one cylinder is at or near the end of its inward travel gas under pressure is admitted to the gas space of the other cylinder and gas is allowed to escape from the first cylinder. Referring to Fig. 1, low pressure liquid from an accumulator (not shown) is supplied through a channel 3 and non-return valves 5 to the cylinders 1 at the inner sides of the pistons 2 and the high pressure liquid is delivered from the inner sides of the piston through non-return valves 8 and outlet channel 7. High pressure gas is supplied through channel 9 to the outer end of one or other of the cylinders according to the position of the shuttle valve 10, the outer end of the other cylinder being connected to an exhaust channel 9A or 9B ; the position of the shuttle valve is changed over by each piston in turn as it reaches the end of its stroke. During the changeover only a slightly reduced high pressure liquid is available from the pump and if this interruption cannot be permitted these may be provided a small high pressure accumulator into which the cylinders supply high pressure liquid and from which high pressure liquid can be withdrawn even during the changeover period.
