Abstract
Methylalkoxypolysiloxanes are made by reacting a methylhydrogenpolysiloxane with an aldehyde, ketone or ester. The radicals introduced into the siloxane by the aldehyde, R,CHO, ketone R.CO.R1 and ester R.COOR1 are respectively in the form of -OCH2R, -OCH.RR1 and both -OCH2R and OR1. The reaction is preferably effected at the reflux temperature of the reactants, in the presence or absence of an anhydrous solvent, e.g. xylene, and preferably in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. metals (e.g. Zn), metal oxides, salts of organic acids (e.g. cobalt acetate, zinc octoate) and organotitanates (e.g. butyl titanate). In examples, methylhydrogensiloxane is reacted with (1) benzaldehyde; (2) dipropylketone; (3) butyl acetate; (4) monomethylglycolmonoacetate; and (5) methylcaprylate. Uses-as waterproofing agents for textiles and ceramics, as lubricants, as cosmetics and as additives for polishes.
