Abstract
Calcium triphosphate is dissolved in aqueous hydrochloric acid, and the phosphoric acid produced is extracted by means of an organic solvent which has a limited miscibility with water. Organic solvents specified are alcohols, e.g. n-butanyl and iso-amyl alcohol, and ketones. Extraction may be effected continuously in co- or counter-current flow, or one or more times in a batch process. An excess of hydrochloric acid is preferably employed in the dissolution step; if less is employed, the organic solvent extract may be treated with aqueous hydrochloric acid so as to extract calcium therefrom. Phosphoric acid may be recovered from the organic solvent extract as an aqueous solution by the addition of an organic solvent miscible with the first solvent but immiscible with aqueous phosphoric acid, e.g. benzene. Hydrogen chloride may be removed from the aqueous phosphoric acid by distillation or stripping with air at a temperature of 80-90 DEG C. The two organic solvents may be separated by fractional distillation and separately recycled. The phosphoric acid may alternatively be recovered by directly subjecting the extract to distillation or stripping so as to remove solvent and hydrogen chloride. Tricalcium phosphate may be subjected to treatment in the form of phosphate rock which may be precalcined. Air may be passed through a hydrochloric acid solution of phosphate rock before organic solvent extraction in order to remove hydrogen fluoride.
