Abstract

805,278. Liquid - blast circuit breakers. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Dec. 14, 1956 [Jan. 30, 1956], No. 38279/56. Class 38 (5). A small oil-volume circuit-breaker has an oil pump 30 controlled by the breaker actuating mechanism and mounted on the breaker pedestal 29 and an arc control chamber 1 with an non-return valve 14 which permits oil to enter the chamber only at a chamber pressure corresponding with a predetermined comparatively low value of ruptured current. The chamber 1 comprises two tubular members 6, 7 of synthetic resin bonded glass fibre fabric, mounted between two metal plates 9, 12 which may have a resistance 22 connected between them. The space 5 between the members 6, 7 forms a venting passage with a hole 11 in the plate 9 to the separator tank 4. The moving contact 16 is operated from a shaft 35 and biased open by a spring 39 acting on a lever 40 also fixed to the shaft 35 and which operates the pump piston-rod 42. The piston 44 can slide on the rod 42 but is urged against its enlarged head by a spring 45. An oil accumulator 55 recharges the pump through its non- return valves 49 so that the breaker may be opened several times in succession. When the breaker is closed the piston 44 is moved to the dotted position with the displaced oil passing through passages 54, 53 and non-return valves 48 to the top of the piston. The sealing of passage 54 by the side of the piston 44 of the end of its stroke has a damping effect on the contact movement. On opening, the spring 45 drives the piston 44 upward to force oil through the non-return valves 47 and towards the chamber 1 as shown by the arrows. At low values of fault current the valve 14 opens and oil is driven through the arc to vents 21. If the breaker remains inoperative after opening the oil which has been pumped returns through openings 17, 50, 51 and 52 to the accumulator 55. At high values of fault current the pressure in the chamber 1 keeps the valve 14 closed so that the piston 44 does not move with the rod 42.
