Abstract

804,712. Alternators; automatic voltage control systems. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD), Ltd., J. Oct. 4, 1956 [Oct. 14, 1955], No. 29321/65. Classes 35 and 38 (4). In an automatic voltage control system for a dynamo-electric generator in which the field excitation is derived by rectifying an A.C. supply which is controlled by a saturable reactor, the reactor is connected in parallel with the excitation rectifier in series with a common impedance. The alternator 1 supplies a D.C. load 2, 3 over a main rectifier 4 and excites its field 5 over a second rectifier 6. Assuming contacts 26 to be open, the power windings 14 of the self-saturating reactor 8 are linked in parallel with the rectifier 6 by a frequency compensating choke 20 and the parallel combination is energized by being connected in series with an impetance 18, 19 across the output of the alternator. The reactor 8 has a constant current reference winding 11 (in series with a barretter 13), a current compounding winding 15, and a D.C. voltage control winding . The flux due to winding 9 normally slightly exceeds that of the reference winding 11 so that any increase in D.C. output voltage increases the saturation of the reactor 8 thereby decreasing the current through the field rectifier 6 and so correcting the voltage. A transformer 21 provides transient feed-back from the field circuit to improve stability. The alternator 1 also has a compounding field winding 7 carrying the D.C. load current. To assist build-up at starting, the no-volt relay 24, which actuates isolating contacts 23 to prevent reverse current when the generator is stationary, also actuates contacts 26 to connect the field rectifier 6 directly across the alternator. An over-voltage relay 27 can open contacts 29 to interrupt the field excitation. Instead of an alternator a D.C. generator with tapped windings or auxiliary A.C. windings, or with a separate A.C. exciter may be used. Specification 804,711 is referred to.
