Abstract

A dentifrice containing a stannous compound capable of supplying at least 10 but not more than 1000 parts per million of stannous ions when in association with water, and being present in said dentrifce in an amount sufficient to provide an amount of undissociated said stannous compound which will not immediately dissociate completely to form stannous ions when associated with water, and which will preferably maintain the above concentration of stannous ions as the dentifrice ages. Such compounds are the slightly water-soluble stannous compounds of which the condensed phosphates, e.g. pyrrophosphate and metaphosphate are preferred, although stannous tartrate, maleate or citrate may be used. The presence of such compounds and in such concentration as above is said to provide a maintained pH level of 3.5 to 6.0 which results in better flavour retention, taste and film formation than before, and particularly when incorporated in fluoride containing dentifrices enhances the anti-dental caries properties of such compositions. Many fluorine containing compounds may be incorporated in the compositions according to the invention including: SnF2, NaF, SnF4, KF, InF3, PdF3, FeF2, LiF, Na2SiF6, CaZrF6, Na2ZrF6, K2ZrF6, KSnF3, NaBF4, SnClF, Sn2ClF3 and fluorotitanates. Other sources of stannous ions that may be included in the compositions are SnSO4, SnCl2 and stannous gluconate. Conventional dentifrice adjuvants which may be included are abrasives, e.g. calcium orthophosphate and alumina, insoluble condensed phosphates, e.g. calcium pyro- and metaphosphates and sodium metaphosphate, and the slightly soluble stannous compounds essential to the compositions may replace, at least in part, the above abrasives: sudsing agents, e.g. the water-soluble alkyl and alkyl ether sulphates and sulphonates in which the alkyl group has 8 to 18 carbon atoms, water-soluble salts of sulphonated monoglycerides of fatty acids having 10 to 18 carbon atoms, water-soluble sulphated fatty alcohols having 10 to 18 carbon atoms, salts of fatty acid amides of taurine, e.g. sodium-N-methyl-N-palmitoyl taurine, salts of fatty acid esters of isethionic acid, or substantially saturated aliphatic acyl amides of saturated aliphatic monoaminocarboxylic acids containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms and in which the acyl group contains 12 to 16 carbon atoms, e.g. sodium-N-lauroyl sarcoside: thickeners, e.g. water-soluble salts of cellulose ethers, gum karaya, arabic or tragacanth, colloidal magnesium aluminium silicate and silica: humectants, e.g. glycerin and sorbitol; flavours, e.g. oils of wintergreen, peppermint, spearmint sassafras and anise; saccharin, dextrose, lerulose and sodium cyelamate.
