Abstract

804,443. Cutting glass. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1956 [Nov. 21, 1955], No. 33301/55. Class 56. [Also in Group XXX] In a machine for cutting glass tubing the tubes 40 are carried by an endless conveyer and are rotated while they pass through a heating stage 25 to a rotary cutter 23 and thence to glazing and annealing stages 37, 38, respectively. Each stage 25, 37 and 38 comprises a number of small gas jets which in the stage 25 are arranged to heat a narrow zone near the end of the tube. Each cutter 23 consists of a bevelled-edge metal wheel, the lower part of which is submerged in a water trough 24. The tubes are lifted clear of the cutters immediately after contact therewith by freely rotating wheels 27.
