Abstract

804,407. Strengthening edges. SHAMAH, I. Nov. 15, 1956, No. 34924/56. Class 42 (1). A tape edging machine comprises parallel jaws 13, 14, at least one of which is spring-loaded towards the other, the jaws being adapted to be bridged by edging tape 58 and to receive edgewise between them a sheet article 59 to be provided with a tape edge. The jaw 13 is fixed to the base 1 of the machine and is connected by dowels 62 to the jaw 13 which may be adjusted against the action of springs 15 by a pair of graduated scrows 22. The separation between the jaws is less than the thickness of the article which co-operates with metal corner members 18, 19 to separate the jaws as it is forced downwardly. A pair of rails 26, 27 adjustably secured to the jaws form a guide for the tape 58 drawn from a dispenser 10 by a retainer 139 anchored to a longitudinally and transversely adjustable bridge 36. The article is located by arms 41 and 46 secured to shafts 42 and 47 rotatably mounted in brackets 45 and 49. The tape, which may be plastic, paper or linen, passes over a fixed roller (not shown) and a roller 53 carried by a bell-crank lever 55 pivoted at 56 and having a roller 57 to engage the underside of one of the arms 41. A knife edge or other cutter for the tape may be located at the position of the roller 51 or a guillotine may co-operate with mitred edges at the ends of the jaws 13, 14 to form a 45 or 90 degrees notch in the tape, a land being left at the centre of the notch to facilitate successive treatment of the four edges of the article which is turned through a rightangle after each insertion between the jaws. A felt wick or roller may be used to moisten the tape if the latter is not self-adhesive. Alternatively, the edges of the article may be moistened or gummed in a shallow bath or by the use of pads or brushes mounted above the jaws. The dispenser 10 may be mechanically driven, the tape being drawn off either automatically or by hand. After insertion of the article, the jaws 13, 14 may be forced towards each other.
