Abstract

804,385. Automatic steering control systems. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 21, 1956 [Feb. 25, 1955], No. 5380/56. Class 38 (4). In an electrical control system, opposed outputs of two signal generators responsive to a variable cancel over a first range of variation of the variable but do not cancel over a second range, the resultant output being added to the output of one of the signal generators to produce an increased control signal over the second range. To cause an aircraft to fly along a radio beam, signals from a localizer radio receiver control rudder 15, Fig. 1, and ailerons 16 through a computer 13 and an autopilot 14. In addition deviations from a heading corresponding to the direction of the beam are detected by a magnetic compass 11, signals from an inductive pick-off 22 of which are applied through an inductive device 25, transformer 32 and computer 13 to maintain the correct course as set by knob 27 adjusting device 25. The deviation signal from the magnetic compass is also applied through a potentiometer 30 to an amplifier 35 to run an induction motor 48 adjusting, for small course deviations, an inductive device 51 until the signal it produces exactly cancels the compass signal. Upon large course deviations, however, stops 60, 61 limit movement of device 51 and the difference between the compass signal and the signal from inductive device 51 is added to the compass signal applied to computer 13 to increase the course correction signal under these conditions. Rate feedback is provided by a generator 49 driven by motor 48. A slipping clutch 52F is provided between motor 48 and inductive device 51 and when a magnetic clutch 53 is de-energized inductive device 51 is centralized by a cam 56. Specification 675,751 is referred to.
