Abstract
804,359. Pipe joints. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Dec. 21, 1955, No. 36697/55. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XIII] The ends 22 of pipe 21 of a heat exchanger are sealed by sealing discs 32 engaging spaced plates 23, 24 and having tubular extensions 33 surmounting the tubes 22, the discs being forced into fluid-tight engagement with the tubes and plates by the pressure of liquid or plastic material, such as a silastic filling the space 35 between the plates 23, 24, and compressed by a clamping means 13 urging the plates 23, 24, together. The heat exchanger comprises a glass shell 11 and glass tubes 21 the ends 22 of which are thick-walled, the plates 23, 24 being urged towards the end of the shell 11 by an end-member 27 actuated by the clamping means 13 which comprises rings 13, 36, engaging tapered surfaces on the members 11, 27, and urged together by spring-loaded bolts 46. The space 35 is closed by a metal band 37 and polytetrafluoroethylene gaskets 25, 26, are arranged between the plates 23, 24, and the members 11, 27. The sealing discs 32 are of rubber or rubber-like material.
