Abstract
A corrosion-inhibiting cold-dip bitumastic primer comprises coal tar, benzene and silica black in the approximate ratio of 42, 33 and 25 per cent, by weight, respectively, and from about 0.002 to 0.1 parts of a sulphonate per 100 parts of primer, the cation of the sulphonate being inorganic. Preferred sulphonic acids include those prepared by sulphonation of the products known as secondary cycle oil, of the alkylation products of benzene, toluene or xylenes with dodecylene or dodecylchloride, and of the mixture of monoalkylbenzenes and dialkylbenzenes known as polydodecylbenzene. Others include those obtained by sulphonating various petroleum fractions, and alkylation products of mono- and polynuclear hydrocarbons. The cation of the sulphonate may be, e.g. lithium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, copper, cobalt, nickel or ammonium. The silica black is a condensate obtained by vaporizing silica in an are whose anode contains silicon and carbon. Specification 804,346, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
