Abstract

The invention comprises a blue phthalocyanine composition comprising a copper phthalocyanine or a chlorinated or brominated copper phthalocyanine and about 0.5 to 5 per cent of a barium, calcium, or magnesium salt of sulphonated zinc phthalocyanine calculated as the zinc phthalocyanine sulphonic acid by weight of said copper phthalocyanine, and a process for preparing such a composition by forming an aqueous slurry containing a copper phthalocyanine or a chlorinated or brominated copper phthalocyanine and about 0.5 to 5 per cent of sulphonated zinc phthalocyanine by weight of said copper phthalocyanine and then adding an aqueous solution of an amount of a barium, calcium or magnesium salt sufficient to produce the corresponding alkaline earth metal salt of the sulphonated zinc phthalocyanine in situ. The mixture is then isolated by filtration. Instead of free sulphonated zinc phthalocyanine, alkali metal salts thereof may be used. Alternatively, the compositions may be made by blending the alkaline earth metal salts of sulphonated zinc phthalocyanine directly in dry or wet form with the copper phthalocyanine. Barium, magnesium and calcium salts specified are the chlorides, bromides and iodides. The sulphonated zinc phthalocyanines preferred contain 1.25-2.5 sulphonic acid groups per molecule. Substituents other than chlorine and bromine may be present in the copper phthalocyanine molecule. In examples, copper phthalocyanine and sulphonated zinc phthalocyanine in an aqueous slurry are treated with (1) barium chloride solution and (2) calcium chloride solution and the pigment mixture filtered off.
