Abstract

<PICT:0803997/IV (a)/1> A washer for sealing a joint between pipes conveying gas, such as coal gas, in which aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene may be present, consists of a body 2 of natural rubber partially covered with a benzene resistant layer 3 of butadiene-acrylic nitrile copolymer secured to the body 2 by an adhesive comprising a solution of chloroprene. The layer 3 preferably has a hardness of 80 DEG Shore and the body 2 a hardness of 58 DEG Shore.
