[Also in Group XXVI] In a diaphragm and piston assembly for actuating a brake in which the diaphragm 10 may be actuated directly by fluid pressure and/or by an independently actuated piston 20 slidable in an extension 18 of the diaphragm housing, the diaphragm 10 is of rubber or like resilient material and has its central portion which is held between a member, such as the head 15 of a push rod 16, actuated by the diaphragm and the piston 20, reinforced, for example, by a fabric or metal core 21. Alternatively, the central portion of the diaphragm may be reinforced by metal plates embedded in and adhered to its opposite faces, or by comminuted material such as ground fibre particles. The diaphragm is normally operated by fluid pressure supplied through a pipe 13 and returned by a spring 17. In the event of failure of the pressure fluid supply to pipe 13, or to augment the normal force of the diaphragm, the latter may be operated by the piston 20 operable by fluid, preferably liquid, supplied through a pipe 19.
