Abstract

803,863. Preventing corrosion. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Jan. 5, 1956 [Feb. 1, 1955], No. 472/56. Class 123(1) Sacrificial or impressed current anodes for the cathodic protection of metallic structures are enclosed in casings which are provided with perforations of such size, number and arrangement as to limit the total current flow and in particular the flow to the part of the cathodic surface nearest to the anode, thereby lengthening the anode life whilst increasing the area protected. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2. the anode 12 consists of a rectangular block of, for example, magnesium, which is secured to the cathodic surface 18 by bolts 20, a sheet 32 of rubber being interposed between the anode and the surface. In this construction the casing 14 is made of metal and is of an inverted pan-shape, its top 28 having a number of holes 30 therein. The casing is secured to the surface 18 so as to be insulated therefrom and from the anode, its lower edge engaging the sheet 32. In a modification the casing itself is made of insulating material. For use in an impressed current protection system the anode 12 is replaced by one of graphite mounted on insulators and supplied by a cable extending through the casing side, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Specification 803,864 is referred to.
