In a pick-up baler comprising a swinging plunger 26, the crop is picked up by a pivoted rake 35 and fed into the baling chamber by a rotary rake 4 on a shaft 3, the latter being driven by the tractor through gearing 15 and a shaft 16 and carrying cranks 9, 14 operating the plunger. The shaft 3 also drives the knotter shaft 11 through chain and sprocket gearing. The plunger 26 comprises spaced segments 25 carried by a crossbar 24 which is rigidly secured to arms 22 on a shaft 52 journalled in bearings 20 and arms 23 on a shaft 19 connected by rods 18 to the cranks. The fingers of the rake 4 pass between the segments as shown in Fig. 2. The baling chamber comprises an upper wall 47 against which the crop is thrown by the rake 4 in advance of the plunger, floor portions 32, 33 and 39, a delivery shoot 43 and removable guide rails 40. The shoot, floor portion 39, guide rails 40 and tying needles 42 may be removed and replaced by an elevator driven from the shaft 3, see Fig. 3 (not shown), or the floor portion 39 may be replaced by an elevator driven by a toothed wheel actuated by the crop passing through the chamber, (see Fig. 5 not shown). The shaft 3 may drive the plunger 26 through a Scotch yoke mechanism. The rake 35 is adjustable by a handle 37 and the rake 4 may be lowered by swinging the baler about its axle 1a.
