Abstract
803,521. Clutch control. FICHTEL & SACKS A.G. Feb. 9, 1955 [March 4, 1954], No. 3818/55. Class 80 (2). A fluid-pressure control whereby a centrifugal main clutch 11, between an engine 10 and a manual change-speed gear 12 on a motorvehicle, is disengaged during gear-shift, e.g. as described in Specification 767,864, has reengagement pressure restored in two stages, firstly permitting light re-engagement of the clutch and secondly supplying full engaging pressure in response to opening the engine throttle or increase in engine speed. Initiation of shift movement of a manual gear-lever 33 closes contacts 36 energizing, from a usual engine-driven generator 42, a solenoid 39, which opens a valve 45, supplying at 32 engine suction, or compressed air, through a duct 29 to a power cylinder 23 operating a clutch-release lever 20 through an adjustable turnbuckle 24, the same movement causing the rear of the valve-head 45, or an additional head on the same stem, to close a communication to a separate chamber 50 previously exhausting the power cylinder 23. When, on completion of the gear shift, the manual shift lever 33 re-opens the contacts 36, the solenoid valve 45 spring-returns to the position shown, communicating the power-cylinder duct 29 with the chamber 50, which now exhausts by opening an adjustably spring-loaded valve 54 by differential pressure until the said pressure reaches a value determined by the adjustable setting of the valve-loading spring 55, at which time the clutch is in light engagement. Complete engagement occurs when the exhaust valve 54 is mechanically opened by a cam 19 on the engine throttle spindle, acting on the valve directly or through a spring, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown; or at a predetermined engine speed by an engine-driven centrifugal governor, Fig. 4, not shown.
