Abstract
Butadiene is prepared by the single-stage dehydrogenation of n-butane or a mixture of n-butane and n-butene or -butenes wherein the concentration of 1-butene in the feed is increased by adding 1-butene to the n-butane or mixtures of n-butane and recycle n-butene from the butadiene recovery step. This may be accomplished by adding 1-butane, prepared, for example, by dimerization of ethylene, to the feed, or the recycle of unconverted butane and butenes, remaining after removal of butadiene from the product, may have its 1-butene content increased by removing a part or the whole of the 2-butene present. The process is carried out conventionally, e.g. at 570-600 DEG C. and 150-200 torr pressure in the presence of a chromia-alumina catalyst. Examples illustrate the increased yields obtained by the increase in 1-butene content.
