Abstract
The invention comprises chromium complexes of o:o1-dihydroxymonoazo compounds of formula <FORM:0802458/IV (c)/1> wherein one R stands for a nitro group and the other stands for a hydrogen atom, which contain from 0.5 to 0.7 atoms of chromium for each molecule of the o:o1-dihydroxymonoazo compound. They are prepared by treating one, or preferably a mixture of both of the monoazo compounds under weakly acid, neutral or alkaline conditions with agents yielding chromium in amounts which give 0.5 to 0.7 atoms of chromium per molecule of monoazo compound. Specified chroming agents are chromium sesquioxide, chromium chloride or fluoride, chromium formate or acetate, mixtures of chromium salts with alkali metal or ammonium salts of tartaric acid and ammoniumoxalato-amminochromate. The metallization is preferably carried out in aqueous medium at elevated temperatures and in the presence of one or more solvents such as ethyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, beta-ethoxyethanol, cyclohexanol, dimethylformamide and mono- or di-ethanolamine. An aqueous alkaline medium containing an alkali metal chromite and glycerol is preferred. The dyestuffs dye wool in olive shades and may also be used to dye silk and synthetic nitrogenous fibres, such as superpolyamides and superpolyurethanes. The o:o1-dihydroxymonoazo dyes are prepared by coupling a diazotized 4- or 5-nitro-2-aminophenol with 1-propionylamino-7-naphthol. In an example the mixture of monoazo compounds obtained by diazotizing a mixture of 4- and 5-nitro-2-aminophenols and coupling with 1-propionylamino-7-naphthol is treated with chromium acetate in aqueous ethylene glycol. The Provisional Specification describes further monoazo dyestuffs and chromium complexes thereof of the above formula, but wherein the propionylamino group is replaced by a carbomethoxyamino or carboethoxyamino group. An example describes the coupling of diazotized 4-nitro-2-aminophenol with 1-carboethoxyamino-7-naphthol and the preparation of the chromium complex of the resultant monoazo dye.
