Abstract
The Specification describes the production of compounds of the general formula OC(NH.A.COOR)2 where A is an alkylene straight- or branched-chain radical having 3-17 carbon atoms, in which the amino group is not attached to a tertiary carbon atom, and R is hydrogen, monovalent alkali metal or an alkyl radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms. These 1,3-di-(carboxyalkyl) ureas are prepared by the alkaline oxidation of 1,3-di-(carboxyalkyl) thioureas (prepared by the process of Specification 799,373), preferred oxidants being hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite, at or below room temperature, to give a solution of the alkali metal salt, which is acidified to precipitate the free acid. The esters are prepared by conventional esterification of the free acids. The free acids may also be prepared by heating a 1-nitroso-1,3-di-(carboxyalkyl) urea (prepared by the process of Specification 801,893) in dilute alkaline or acid solution, preferably in dilute hydrochloric acid solution. In examples the following compounds are prepared: 1,3-di-(e -carboxypentyl) urea, 1,3-di-(g -carboxypropyl) urea, and their methyl, n-butyl, n-octyl, n-decyl and myristyl di-esters.
