Abstract
801,604. Respiratory appliances. NORMCLAIR, Ltd. April 26, 1957 [May 3, 1956], No. 13689/56. Class 81 (2). In order to avoid loss of oxygen at low altitudes and to admit atmospheric air to an aircraft breathing mask when no oxygen is required a light, flap valve 16 is mounted on the regulator diaphragm 3. This has less flow resistance than the oxygen valve mechanism 12 and opens at low altitudes to pass air through ports 18 to pipe 7 and mask 6. At greater altitudes known mechanism operating on the diaphragm causes oxygen to be supplied at positive pressure, which causes the valve 16 to be held closed continuously. At such altitudes, oxygen passed by valve 11 operates in a venturi arrangement to draw air through an aneroidcontrolled valve 13 in accordance with the proportion necessary. In a second embodiment a non-return valve is fitted into a pipe leading into the flexible pipe 7, so that again air may be freely drawn in at low altitudes, but the valve is held closed by excess pressure at greater heights.
