Abstract

801,532. Tempering glass sheets. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Aug. 30, 1956 [Sept. 13, 1955], No. 26510/56. Class 56. In apparatus for tempering curved glass sheets as described in Specification 771,036 some at least of the tempering-fluid outlet nozzles 74 have flexible extensions 78 preferably of a silicone although rubber or thin copper tubes may also be used. The nozzle extension should be spaced not more than three and a half inches from the glass surface to be tempered and may be as little as a quarter of an inch from said surface since impact between the nozzle extensions and the rigid frame C supporting the glass-carrying mould M during their relative orbital movement merely causes the nozzle extensions to flex. The extensions 78 should be of the same internal diameter as the nozzle 74 which may have its outer surface feathered to receive the tube. Various forms of extension are described, namely a rubber or silicone tube reinforced by a metal spring, a metal tube connected to the nozzle 74 by a flexible rubber or silicone coupling or a tightly wound steel spring, or a tube formed itself of a lightly wound spring.
