Abstract

A killed carbon steel, preferably killed with Si-Al, contains 0.05-0.6 per cent C, 0.05-0.6 per cent Si, 0.15-1.0 per cent Mn, 0.005-0.015 per cent N, 0.01-0.15 per cent V, and the balance Fe apart from usual impurities such as S and P not more than 0.05 per cent each, and Cu, Cr, Ni, Mo, not more than 0.5 per cent in all. The steel is particularly useful in structures, reinforcing, and welding. The nitrogen may be introduced by blowing with air or other gas mixture containing oxygen and nitrogen, in an acid-lined converter, whilst reducing the carbon content; whilst the V content may be attained by using a pig iron obtained from an ore containing V. Preferably there is no substantial addition of N or V in any other manner.
