Abstract

801,204. Batteries. HYSING, E. G., and GRUSELL, A. E. Sept. 27, 1954 [Sept. 25, 1953], No. 27773/54. Class 53. The elements of a dry cell comprise a foil-like cathode 1 of a metal oxide, graphite and fibrous material to which is attached a metal layer 3 having a terminal wire 4. On the other side of the cathode is a paper sheet 2 impregnated with electrolyte and attached to an anode 5 of zinc having a terminal wire 6. The four layers are pressed together to form a single unit. The cathode may consist of oxide of copper, mercury, manganese, tungsten, molybdenum, &c., mixed with graphite and linen fibres, formed into a foil and metallized on one side with copper or iron by means of a gun. The sheet 2 is metallized on one side with zinc, and the non-metallized sides of the two foils are rolled or pressed together and impregnated with a solution of potassium hydroxide or ammonium chloride. Alternatively the unmetallized foil of oxide, graphite and fibrous material and the sheet paper may be made to adhere together, and the metal films then applied to the exposed surfaces. In another method the anode metal is applied in the form of powder or flakes to the damp paper sheet which is then pressed and dried. In a further method the anode consists of wire netting or of wires which are baked into one side of the sheet, or a metal foil may be provided with a rough surface or small barbs to make it adhere to the paper sheet. The dry electrolyte may be introduced into the paper during its manufacture, or the paper may be soaked in a solution of the electrolyte and dried. The combined electrodes and paper separator may be embedded in plastic material in which a channel is provided through which water may be introduced when the cell is required for use. The completed unit may be wound in a spiral.
