Abstract
Compositions useful as detegent additives for lubricating oils, particularly mineral oils, comprise a blend of the reaction product of a divalent metal base, an alkylated phenol and a sulphurizing reagent with an oil-soluble copolymer of an unsaturated nitrile and one or more copolymerizable unsaturated organic esters. The divalent metal is preferably a Group II metal, examples being calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium and zinc. The alkyl substituent of the phenol is preferably a C4-C12 radical, isooctyl being particularly preferred. Suitable sulphurizing agents are elemental sulphur and sulphur mono- and di-chlorides. The reaction products are believed to have one of the following formul <PICT:0800964/III/1> or <PICT:0800964/III/2> where M is the divalent metal, R is the alkyl substituent of the phenol, and n is between 2 and 5 inclusive. The nitriles have the general formula R-CN, where R is a metal-free organic group containing 2 to 24 carbon atoms and one olefinic double bond which is preferably conjugated to a carbonyl or nitrile group. Acrylonitrile is preferred. The ester may be that of an unsaturated alcohol such as vinyl, allyl, or crotyl alcohol and a saturated acid, e.g. vinyl acetate, or that of a fatty alcohol and an unsaturated acid such as fumaric, maleic, itaconic, acrylic, and methacrylic acids, and preferably contains between 2 and 24 carbon atoms. The copolymer is preferably formed by free-radical polymerization, through cationic and anionic polymerizations are also suitable. Examples of catalysts for all three forms of polymerization are given. In an example, an additive composition consists of a copolymer formed from palm kernel fumarate, vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile blended with sulphurized barium dioctyl phenate. This blend is contrasted with sulphurized barium di-octyl phenate used alone or blended with calcium sulphonates and phosphosulphurized alphapinene.
