Class 79(2) [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] In a vehicle power take-off device in which drive is transmitted from the vehicle engine through an input shaft d, an axiallyengageable friction clutch and a coaxial second shaft f to a splined output shaft (not shown) independently of the main transmission clutch, disengagement of the clutch causes automatic application of a friction brake to the second shaft, axial movement of a rotatable part o of the brake bringing the shaft f to rest. As shown a sleeve a mounted in bearings b in a casing c is driven by the shaft d from the engine (not shown). The sleeve a is connected to the shaft f by the clutch comprising an annular toothed member a<SP>1</SP>, plates a<SP>3</SP>, e having teeth meshing with the member a<SP>1</SP> and a member e<SP>2</SP> respectively, the member e<SP>2</SP> having a splined connection f to the shaft f and a nut n urging the member e<SP>2</SP> against a shoulder m on the shaft f. Slidable on the shaft f is a pressure plate g connected to the member e<SP>2</SP> by rods h<SP>1</SP> and springs h whereby the clutch is engaged. The clutch is disengaged by movement of a yoke i connected by pins i<SP>1</SP> to a collar j mounted by a bearing j<SP>1</SP> on a sleeve extension g<SP>1</SP> of the pressure plate g, movement of the yoke i causing axial movement of the plate g to permit disconnection between the plates a<SP>3</SP>, e. Such movement causes compression of the springs h which axially moves the member e<SP>2</SP> and shaft f whereby the rotatable brake part o formed as a flat disc on the shaft f engages a disc p of sintered bronze carried by a cover plate g on the casing c to brake the shaft f on clutch disengagement. The shaft f is connected by spur gearing k to the splined output shaft. The discs o, p may be modified by (1) causing the disc o to bear directly on the cover plate, (2) by replacement by a conical type axially engageable brake. The clutch may be of the conical type.
