Abstract

800,756. Mounting indicating apparatus. BOYSEN, J., [trading as PLATH, C. (Firm of)]. July 19, 1956 [Sept. 17, 1955; Feb. 4, 1956], No. 22421/56. Class 106 (4). [Also in Group XX] A mounting for an indicating instrument, e.g., a compass case comprises at least one gimbal supported by helical or spiral springs having not more than 1.5 turns and a natural frequency of oscillation not greater than 4 cycles per second. As shown in Fig. 1, the compass case 1 is journalled at 3 in gimbal 5 and the trunnions 6, 6<SP>1</SP> of which are journalled in brackets 7, 7<SP>1</SP> supported by helical springs 8, 8<SP>1</SP> on a base frame 10. The trunnions 6, 6<SP>1</SP> may also be spring mounted on the brackets 7, 7<SP>1</SP>. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the outer gimbal 23 is supported by lengths of material 25 (e.g. metal, natural or synthetic fibres) in the enlarged heads of rods 26 which are axially adjustable in bearings 28, 29 and supported by the springs 32, 33. Alternatively, the trunnions 24 of gimbal 23 may be connected to a lever by a universal joint to a lever which is coupled to rods 26 by another universal joint; rocking levers may replace the univeral joints. In a further form, the compass case may be connected to the inner gimbal by a pair of rollers which engage arcuate slots in that gimbal, which is connected in the same way to the outer gimbal.
