Abstract

800,344. Pliers for applying split rings. WALDES KOH-I-NOOR, Inc. Nov. 22, 1956 [Dec. 7, 1955], No. 35753/56. Class 61. A plier-type tool for fitting a retaining splitring R to a shaft S has on one jaw a pocket 17 with side walls 19 dimensioned to limit the spread of the ring located in it when it has been expanded enough to slip onto the shaft S positioned in a central hole 16; the tip of the other jaw is formed as a wedge 24 which enters an opening 20 in the side of the pocket 17 to engage and extend a split 21 in the ring R. The jaw with the wedge is offset at about 90 degrees on either side of the pivot pin and the edge of the wedge 24 is inclined downwards so that it engages the split 21 with a scissoring motion which assists in holding the ring in the pocket. The pocket 17 is in a detachable holder 14 and a spring 25 keeps the pliers open when not in use. In embodiments in Figs. 3 to 7 (not shown) the wedge-bearing jaw is cranked somewhat similarly to that in Fig. 1, but is pivoted in lugs which depend on either side of the slot in the other arm of the pliers so that the ring-receiving pocket opens downwards whilst the wedge moves into the split upwardly. Because of this the edge of the wedge faces upwards in this embodiment. In the form shown in Fig. 10 the wedge 71 is on a spring-controlled arm 67 pivoted to the cranked jaw and is so placed in relation to the main pivot that the wedge moves laterally to engage and disengage the split-ring.
