Abstract
Alkali metal triphosphates, pyrophosphates or mixtures thereof are prepared by neutralizing aqueous orthophosphoric acid with an alkali metal carbonate or hydroxide to obtain a molar proportion of P2O5 to alkali metal oxide within the range of 1:2 and 3:5 and spraying the solution into a spraying tower in contact with hot gases, the spraying conditions being adjusted so that the waste gases leave the tower at 200 DEG to 500 DEG C. The moisture content of the waste gases may be between 60 and 400 grams of water per kilogram. According to examples: (1) orthophosphoric acid solution containing 75 per cent H3PO4 was treated with sodium carbonate to adjust the P2O5 alkali metal oxide ratio to 3:5 and the resulting solution was sprayed at 100 DEG C. into a tower concurrent with heating gases entering at 700-800 DEG C. and leaving at about 380 DEG C. with a moisture content of 100 grams per kilogram. Sodium triphosphate of 97 per cent purity was obtained. (3) Orthophosphoric acid solution was treated with aqueous sodium carbonate solution and after heating to 100 DEG C. was sprayed concurrently with a gas entering the spray tower at 900 DEG C. and leaving at 300 DEG C. The mixture contained 75 per cent sodium pyrophosphate and 24 per cent of triphosphate.
