Abstract
799,414. Tube expanding. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO., Ltd., and ARMSTRONG, F. G. G. April 11, 1957 [March 3, 1956], No. 6747/56. Class 83 (4). A method of concurrently straightening and sizing tubing comprises holding a length of said tubing rigidly only at or adjacent to one end thereof and forcing a ball through said length of tubing from said end to the other end thereof. A long length of tubing 3 is held at one end 3b in a collar 6, the other end 3a being free, while a tungsten carbide ball 2, of a diameter slightly larger than the internal diameter of the tubing, is pushed therethrough from the fixed end by a ram 4. The ball 2 may alternatively be forced through the tubing by hydraulic pressure of the order of 1,000 lb. per square inch, the tubing forming part of an oil circulation circuit actuated by a pump. The fixed end of the tubing may be in threaded engagement with its support or be secured therein by expansion. The sized and straightened tube may be cut into lengths.
