Abstract
Alkali barbiturates and alkali thiobarbiturates are produced in sterile anhydrous form by admixing an aqueous alkaline solution of the barbituric or thiobarbituric acid with about 2 to 10 per cent by weight, with respect to the barbiturate, of a buffer salt such as sodium carbonate or sodium phosphate at a temperature below 10 DEG C., and filtering at this temperature then freeze drying the filtered solution preferably in the ampoules in which the material is ultimately sealed. The starting solution should have a pH of 8 to 12, it may vary, but should be such that solution occurs without hydrolysis of the barbiturates. The concentration of the barbiturate in the starting solution is between 10 to 40 per cent by weight. Other suitable buffer substances that may be used are the citrates of alkali metals and glycine.
