Abstract

798,466. Nuclear reactors. PARSONS & CO., Ltd., C. A. Dec. 21, 1956 [Nov. 29, 1955], No. 34216/55. Class 39(4). Absorber rods for controlling the neutron flux distribution and for containing fertile material inside a nuclear reactor are in articulated or link form. The links 7, 9, 10 are connected by universal joints 9a and each link comprises a sheath 14 and liner 13 and is filled with fertile material such as thorium. Radial arms 12 and a cap 8 on the top link 7 hold the rod in place and provide for lifting, a conical portion 10a guides the lowest link 10, and fins 11 centre the rod in its channel.
