Abstract

Resinous products capable of forming films in air are obtained by reacting aluminium alcoholates having alkoxy groups with 3 or 4 carbon atoms with glycols having 6 or more carbon atoms and reacting the resulting products with drying or non-drying fatty acids. Aluminium alcoholates specified are the isopropoxide, sec.-butoxide, di-isopropoxide monoisobutoixde and the di-sec.-butoxide monoisopropoxide. Glycols mentioned are hexylene, octylene and dipropylene glycol. Suitable fatty acids are those of linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil, tobacco seed oil, tung oil, or soya bean oil. The products in solution give coating compositions. Pigments or fillers may be included. In the examples: (1) octylene glycol was added to a white spirit solution of aluminium isopropoxide and the mixture distilled in vacuo to remove isopropanol and some white spirit. To the resulting clear solution linseed oil fatty acids are added and distillation resumed. Addition of more white spirit and fatty acids yielded a solution which dried in air to a hard film. The other examples are similar, employing the following ingredients: (2) aluminium tri-sec.-butoxide, octylene glycol and dehydrated castor oil fatty acids; (3) aluminium tri-sec.-butoxide, dipropylene glycol and stearic acid; (4) aluminium di - sec.-butoxide-mono-isopropoxide, dipropylene glycol and stearic acid. Tendencies of certain products to gel can be overcome by the use of gel cutters, e.g. isobutanol or ethyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark), in place of some of the white spirit. Preferably the aluminium alkoxide and the glycol are mixed at low temperatures, e.g. 0-5 DEG C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 772,144.
