Abstract

797,777. Purifying and cooling exhaust. OXY-CATALYST, Inc. May 25, 1956 [May 31, 1955], No. 16298/56. Class 7(2) To maintain under normal engine operating conditions the temperature of a catalyst, over which exhaust gases from engines operating on leaded petrol pass, between 700‹F. and 1400‹F., and in any case below 1500‹F. at the catalyst surface so that lead compounds deposited on the catalyst do not form a fused coating thereon, the following steps are taken:-(1) the engine air-fuel ratio is controlled, preferably within the range 12: 1 to 15:1, (2) air is used to dilute the exhaust gases, e.g. in the range of ratios from 0.5: to 2:1, (3) catalyst pellets are used having average dimensions within the range 1-32 in. to 3-8 in., e.g. in the form of spheres or cylinders of diametral length. Exhaust gases are adjustably diluted with air at 14 and pass through a bed of catalyst pellets 4 confined between stainless steel grids 5 in an insulated chamber 1. Partitions 6 welded to the upper grid 5 form compartments partially filled via stoppered orifices 7 with the pellets 4. The grids 5 are so mounted as to be freely expansible. The catalyst may be an activated oxide, such as alumina, beryllia, thoria, magnesia or zirconia, impregnated with finely divided platinum, palladium, ruthenium, silver, copper, nickel, cobalt, or silver-chromium, copperchromium or copper-manganese, alumina impregnated with 0.05 to 0.5 per cent by weight ot platinum being preferred.
