Abstract

In a process for preparing flexible elastomeric cellular products from liquid reaction mixtures which include a liquid polyisocyanate, water and an active-hydrogen-containing polymeric material having an average molecular weight from 1,000 to 5,000 and an acid number not greater than 5, a material selected from the group consisting of nonionic and cationic surface-active agents is added to a liquid polyisocyanate before the polyisocyanate is mixed with the water and the active-hydrogen-containing polymeric material. The expression "activehydrogen - containing polymeric materials" means polyesters, polyesteramides, polyalkylene ether glycols, and mixtures of two or more of these. Suitable materials are, for example, those described in Specifications 731,071, 694,982, 696,450 and 696,449 and in U.S.A. Specification 2,692,873. Preferred are polyesters with an acid number not greater than 2, a hydroxyl number of about 60 and an average molecular weight of about 2,000. Representative polyisocyanates are 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanates, toluene 2,4,6-triisocyanate and resinous mixtures of polyisocyanates such as those described in Specification 687,055, [Group IV (b)], which are soluble in liquid polyisocyanates. Suitable nonionic surface-active agents are polyoxyethylated vegetable oils, alkyl aryl polyethylene glycol ethers, polyoxyethylene lauryl alcohol, polyethylene glycol monoricinoleate, octylphenol polyether alcohol, sorbitan monolaurate, or mono-oleate and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate. Suitable cationic surface-active agents are octyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and octylene dimethyl ethyl ammonium bromide. In examples, to a diethylene glycol/adipic acid hydroxy polyester mixed with water and N-methyl morpholine there is added a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanates containing a polyoxyethylated vegetable oil. The mixture is poured into a mould and the foamed product is cured by heating to 160 DEG F.
