796,490. Voltage measurement. EAST LANCASHIRE CHEMICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 28, 1954 [Aug. 20, 1954], No. 38723/57. Divided out of 24236/54. Class 37. [Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (c)] Amplification or measurement of a small D.C. voltage is effected by subjecting the electron stream of a discharge tube to an oscillatory deflecting field, so producing in the anode circuit a carrier wave whose amplitude is modulated only by the said D.C. voltage. In the circuit shown, this voltage is applied to the control grid 12 of the tube 10. Anode 13 is connected to an H.T. source via a tuned circuit 17, 18. A coil 14, energized by an oscillator 16 of constant frequency and amplitude, provides the transverse magnetic field, thereby producing an A.C. in the anode circuit whose amplitude varies only with the D.C. voltage on grid 12. The output may have a further amplifying stage 19, and the amplitude is measured by a meter 20, which may be calibrated to read the modulating D.C. voltage directly.
