Abstract

796,297. Moulded plastic boats. MECHANS, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1956 [Nov. 30, 1955], No. 34252/55. Class 113. A lifeboat is constructed of reinforced synthetic resinous material comprising a moulded hull having buoyant bodies, e.g., buoyancy tanks 14 integrated therewith in the course of the moulding operation. The material used consists of a suitable resin and filling, e.g., a polyester resin with a glass fibre filling. The shell is formed in a female mould by applying resin which after gelling is covered by a layer of glass scrim cloth 10 impregnated with resin. The hull after the initial set is built up by layers 11, 12 and 13 each formed of a screed of glass or other reinforcing fibres impregnated with resin. The sides top and web ends of the buoyancy tanks are formed over a pattern from a first layer 23 of resin impregnated glass scrim cloth and two succeeding layers 24 and 25 of glass or other reinforcing fibres impregnated with resin, the top and face having wood core stiffeners 19-20 overlaid with layers 21 and 22 bonding same into position. Each top surface is provided with a recess to accommodate the end of a thwart. The tank components thus formed are placed in position in the hull in end to end abutting relationship along each side, the hull forming the closure to each tank. A layer 58 is applied to bond the tanks into position. Provision tanks and thwarts are similarly moulded and bonded into position in the hull. The deck and bulkhead sections 46 are formed over a pattern, similarly moulded as the buoyancy tank components, raised stiffeners 48 and 49 being provided in deck 47. A wooden keel is inserted in the keel section and layers 55 and 56 applied. Layer 59 is applied over all and the integral hull is cured.
