Abstract

796,188. Electric tests. ARO EQUIPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 11, 1955 [Aug. 15, 1955], No. 32287/55. Class 37. In a liquid level indicator using the dielectric properties of the liquid to change the capacity of a condenser as the height of the liquid varies, the condenser forms part of an L-C resonant circuit which is connected in parallel with an indicating instrument supplied with the output from a fixed frequency oscillator. As shown, the amplified output from a crystal oscillator is fed through a blocking condenser 33 and rectifier 35 to a voltmeter 36. In parallel with meter 36 is a resonant circuit consisting of an inductance 46, a capacitance 47 and a variable capacitance provided by plates 12, 13 which dip into the liquid 11 in a tank 10. The resonant frequency of this L-C circuit is arranged to be higher than the oscillator frequency when tank 10 is empty so that minimum voltage is then applied to meter 36 whereas the impedance offered by the L-C circuit to the oscillator output rises with increase in the liquid level and the meter reading increases. A potential divider 38, 41 connected to a D.C. source 23 applies a D.C. voltage across the meter in opposition to the amplified oscillator output an adjustable wiper 39 being provided to adjust the zero setting of the meter when tank 10 is empty. The measuring range of the meter is variable by a wiper 43 as in resistor 42.
