In a system for maintaining a constant linear speed of a filament or web being wound on a roll, a tachometer generator is driven by drum held against the periphery of the roll, and the difference between the generator output and a reference voltage, controls a grid-controlled rectifier supplying the roll-drive-motor. To provide a wide speed control range, changespeed gears may be used in the tachometer generator drive, or with an A.C. tachometer generator, a tapped transformer.
