795,242. Making bearing cages. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. Feb. 2, 1956 [Feb. 17, 1955], No. 4799/55. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A method of manufacturing a cage for ball or roller bearing comprises machining the cage from sintered metal powder, e.g. bronze, impregnating the bearing surfaces with polytetrafluorethylene, machining said surfaces to provide a surface of metal and polytetrafluorethylene and etching away the surface layers of metal with an etching agent, e.g. dilute nitric acid, to leave pitted bearing surfaces of polytetrafluorethylene. In an embodiment the bronze cage is sintered from spheroidal powder of uniform size capable of passing a sieve of 100-200 B.S. mesh. After machining the cage is degreased and then washed in distilled water and vacuum dried. The cage is immersed in an aqueous suspension of polytetrafluorethylene in an evacuated vessel and the pressure raised to approximately 30 1bs./sq. inch and slowly released. The polytetrafluorethylene penetrates the sintered bronze to a depth of 0.030 to 0.040 inch. The cage is next drained of fluid and dried under vacuum and heated in an electric furnace to a temperature of 380‹ to 400‹ C. for 15 minutes to fuse the polytetrafluorethylene. The irregular but continuous film of polytetrafluorethylene on the bearing surfaces is removed by machining or scraping to produce a surface of polytetrafluorethylene and metal. Finally, the cage is degreased, washed in distilled water and etched in dilute nitric acid to remove the metal to a depth of about 0.001 inch to produce a honeycomb bearing surface of polytetrafluorethylene. Alternatively, the cage is made from a sintered compound of bronze powder and powdered polytetrafluorethylene.
