Abstract

Indoles of the formula: <FORM:0794965/IV (b)/1> where R and R1 are H or C1-C6 alkyl are prepared by treating diarylformamidines of the formula: <FORM:0794965/IV (b)/2> with an alkoxide R2OM (R2 being alkyl or cycloalkyl and M an alkali metal) and converting the alkali metal derivative of the indole so obtained into the free base, e.g. by treatment with water. The formamidine is prepared from the arylamine and ethyl orthoformate (with a trace of hydrochloric acid as catalyst) an excess of the arylamine being used as solvent and retained as such for the indole condensation. Similarly the metal alkoxide is made in excess of alcohol and used as such. In the examples there are prepared (1) N:N1-di-(o-tolyl)-formamidine, potassium cyclohexanolate and indole therefrom; and (2) N:N1-di-(o-ethylphenyl)-formamidine and 3-methylindole.
