Abstract
794,453. Jet propulsion nozzles. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. Nov. 19, 1956 [Dec. 22, 1955], No. 36736/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] A jet engine thrust reversal device comprises a number of thrust reversal members having an inoperative position outside the jet pipe but movable to an operative position to form a series of aerofoil section rings shaped so as to reverse partially the direction of flow of most of the jet, the usual nozzle being inoperative while the thrust reversal device is operative, the device being such that when operative, each annular thrust reversal nozzle defined by two adjacent rings accelerates the gas flow to the issuing speed of the jet when the usual nozzle is operative, and the total effective outlet area of the thrust reversal device when operative is equal to that of the usual nozzle when operative. Fig. 3 shows the invention applied to the thrust reversal device of Specification 780,669, the rings 14a being shown in axial cross-section in the operative position. The total effective outlet area is the sum of the annular areas shown by lines 15 and the circular area shown by line 16. The gas flow to the device shown by line 17 is subsonic, the. issuing flow being supersonic. In Fig. 5, the annular rings shown in cross-section are slidable from an annular space between the jet pipe 30 and a cowling 30g to the operative position shown. The nozzle 31 is blanked off by a number of baffle segments 25, directing the jet into the rings 24. The total effective outlet area is the sum of the annual areas shown by lines 26.
