Abstract
793,605. Cold separation of gas mixtures. STAMICARBON N.V. April 5, 1956 [April 7, 1955], No. 10477/56. Class 8(2). A mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen is separated from coke oven gas previously freed from readily condensible constituents by washing in a column with liquid nitrogen supplied by a compressor 3, Fig. 3, through a duct 6 and an expansion valve 6a, the coke oven gas being supplied through a duct 4 to the base of the column and being cooled during its upward passage by indirect heat exchange with liquid nitrogen supplied from the compressor 3 through a valved duct 7 to a condenser 2 located within the column at an intermediate level thereof. Nitrogen vapour from the condenser 2 is returned through a duct 8 to the compressor 4 which has a nitrogen feed inlet duct 3a. Product gaseous mixture leaves the column head through a duct 5 and a mixture of liquid methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen is withdrawn through a valved duct 11. In a modification the column comprises a lower portion to which the coke oven gas is supplied through a duct 4, Fig. 4 and which houses the condenser 2 and an upper portion to which is supplied through a duct 13 partly separated gas from the head of the lower portion of the column and the washing liquid nitrogen through the valved duct 6. Liquid from the base of the upper column portion is fed through a duct 12 to act as washing liquid for coke oven gas ascending the lower column portion.
