Vehicles to be garaged in compartments 207, 207<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 2) disposed on several floors of a building are first carried by a lift 204 or 204<SP>1</SP> to the proper floor and then delivered to a wheeled conveying device such as a carriage 210 or 2101 which carries them to a position adjacent an empty compartment. As illustrated the vehicles are carried by wheeled platforms which are stored, when empty, in the compartments 207 and each carriage 210 comprises two portions 208 (Fig. 5) of which one serves to remove a loaded or unloaded platform from a compartment while the other subsequently delivers an unloaded or loaded platform to the same compartment. Further lifts 205, 2051 serve to remove the vehicles from store. The vehicles may be driven directly on to wheeled platforms in the lifts or the platforms may be removed from the lifts to be loaded. The wheeled platforms are transferred to and from the carriages 210 either by rams 222, 223 (Fig. 5) mounted beneath the carriages or by tilting the floors of the carriage, of the compartments, and of the lifts. The two portions of each wheeled carriage may be separated by a central bogie 215 from which the carriage can be controlled. Alternatively the system may be remotely controlled.
