Abstract
A veterinary preparation for use in the treatment of mastitis caused by penicillin-sensitive organisms comprises a suspension of procaine penicillin G in a gel consisting of at least one lithium p salt of a long-chain aliphatic acid containing from 10 to 28 carbon atoms in the molecule, e.g. lithium stearate, and a mineral oil, which is liquid paraffin or a mixture of liquid paraffin with white or soft yellow paraffin. The preparations contain from 0.1 to 10, and preferably 0.6 to 1, per cent of the lithium salt and, e.g., 3.5 per cent procaine penicillin G. They may also contain an aluminium salt of the above mentioned aliphatic acids and a therapeutic salt of streptomycin or dihydrostreptomycin, e.g. the sulphate. In one example, lithium stearate is triturated with liquid paraffin and the mixture heated to 210 DEG C. with stirring until it becomes clear. The temperature is then allowed to fall, but not below 150 DEG C. for at least one hour, and the cooled gel is passed through a homogenizer to form a mobile liquid. To this liquid procaine penicillin G is added and triturated until no particles of the penicillin salt exceed 100 microns in size.
