Abstract
A benzilic acid salt of an a ,a -diphenyl-a -oxy-acetic acid - (b - dialkylaminoethyl) ester is prepared by reacting the corresponding a -dialkylaminoethyl chloride with benzilic acid in sufficient excess over that for ester formation to provide for salt formation, in aqueous isopropyl alcohol (at least 85 per cent by volume of isopropyl alcohol), the alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. the methyl group. An appreciable amount of the hydrochloride salt of the a,a - diphenyl - a - oxyacetic acid - (b - dialkylaminoethyl) ester is also formed when aqueous isopropyl alcohol containing 91 per cent or more by volume of isopropyl alcohol is used. In the examples the above benzilic acid salt is prepared using 90 per cent aqueous isopropyl alcohol, and a mixture of the above benzilic acid salt and the hydrochloride salt is prepared using 92-96 per cent aqueous isopropyl alcohol.
